Carl Woche came over from Germany by ship to the US in 1864 as a stowaway. He came to NE Iowa, stopping in Postville. This is where he met Charlotte Staadt. They married and had one daughter, Eliza Helena Woche. When she was about two, Charlotte contracted diptheria. Her mother came to care for her, and they both died of the disease. From there, Carl moved with Eliza to Nebraska where he met Rosa Brannen. They married and raised Eliza.
