Notes

First Spouse, William Osborn Branen

Also spelled "Brannen," "Branon;" William was a tailor.
1856 Census, Linn Co., Iowa Vol 64 p 2 line 15; Information from J.L. and Winnie Kirk Branen 1968 and 1969; Cemetery records at Atlantic and Lewis, Cass, Iowa. Various letters, copies of which are in the possession of Tolman Family Genealogy Center. Also known as Osborn Branon. Arlene Kelly Tolman's records has Osborne born in Ind., Kentucky. Lucy made her and Osborne's clothes. In 1852 they moved to Center Point, Linn, Iowa - Osborne in failing health. Lucy's brother Nathan talked Osborne into going to California for his health. (Other family records indicate that he went to California in search of gold and never came back. Possibly went with father-in-law, Nathan Tolman. One family record indicated he "joined the Mormons," but does not specify if that was to cross the plains, pan gold or as a baptized member.) He left May 1852/54. Family "tradition" suggests that he was killed in a corral in California while caring for cattle.
There were 5 children and one unborn when he left. Lived 1/4 mile from Uncle Brice and moved in with them until 1856 when Osborne's brother moved the family to Polk City, Polk, Iowa. Lucy's mother also lived with the sister Esther (Tolman) Brice in Center Point. After Osborne went to California Lucy met Lewis Conley Bishop, but they were afraid to marry least Osborne return and they would be bigamists. In order to avoid this she went through the formality of a divorce (11 Mar 1859 in Polk County, Iowa) so she could marry Bishop, who was a widower with 9 children. (Records of Ethel Irene McKee Ainsworth, 1756 Sue Way, Sparks, Nevada 89431 (702 331-3476). All of William's children were sealed to Lucy and Lewis Couley Bishop 1 Nov 1951. Osborne and Lucy had an estimated 430 descendants in 1972. It is supposed by the family that he died somewhere in California.
